**Reviving a Heritage Home for Modern Family Living**

Nestled in a leafy corner of Sydney’s Inner West, this charming single-storey house, located within a heritage conservation area, was in desperate need of a new lease on life. With a Development Application approved by Inner West Council, this project is now complete, successfully transforming a tired, run-down property into a stylish, functional family home. Designed by _hecticrAt Architects_ in collaboration with Homeimpact Design, the project involved a deep partnership with the young couple and their growing family to create a home that would reflect their lifestyle while preserving the house’s historic character.

The existing home had seen many modifications over the years, but with little regard for the beautiful original features that once defined it. The access to the backyard was blocked by a poorly designed laundry and bathroom—a situation that is all too common in many older homes in Sydney. The interior had become a maze of disjointed rooms, with the rich history of the house largely obscured.

The design approach took a two-pronged direction to address these challenges and respect the house’s heritage. First, the front half of the house was reconfigured and upgraded, restoring key original features such as tessellated tiles, intricate arch detailing within the entry corridor, bay window seats, and beautiful stained glass windows. In keeping with the original style, new design elements were added that enhanced the charm of the home while bringing it into the 21st century.

At the rear, a sleek, single-storey addition was introduced. The L-shaped open-plan living, dining, and kitchen areas were designed to maximise natural light and provide seamless access to the garden. This contemporary space contrasts with the front, featuring clean lines and a minimalist aesthetic that opens up to a wrap-around patio with a stunning timber slat ceiling detail. The patio faces the lush garden and a newly constructed swimming pool, creating the perfect setting for outdoor living.

The design also features thoughtful details that add both style and functionality. The ensuite is hidden behind cleverly designed cupboard doors, and a concealed sliding door from the powder room provides access to the laundry. A dedicated home office, complete with a built-in desk and shelving, ensures that the family can work from home in comfort and style.

The couple are thrilled with their transformed home, which was even featured in the _Daily Telegraph_ Home section under the headline “Awakening a Sleeping Beauty.” This project is a beautiful example of how a heritage home can be restored and modernised to meet the needs of a growing family, while staying true to the unique character and charm of its past.
